How final expense works

Final expense policies are a type of whole life insurance with smaller coverage amounts, typically from about $5,000 to $50,000. Approval is based on a few health questions instead of a medical exam.

If you have serious health conditions, guaranteed-issue policies are available. They accept everyone in the eligible age range but usually include a waiting period, often two years, before the full benefit is paid for a non-accidental death.

Is final expense right for you?

A good fit if you

  • Are over 50 and want simple, lasting coverage
  • Don't want your family paying for your funeral
  • Have health issues that make other coverage hard to get
  • Want a policy that never expires

Keep in mind

  • It costs more per dollar of coverage than larger policies
  • Guaranteed-issue policies have a waiting period
  • Coverage amounts are meant for final costs, not income replacement

Final expense questions

Don't see yours? Ask us directly.

How much coverage do I need?

Enough to cover a funeral or cremation, any outstanding medical bills, and small debts. Funerals commonly cost several thousand dollars to well over ten thousand, so we help you estimate based on your wishes.

Can I qualify with health problems?

Usually, yes. Simplified-issue policies ask a few health questions, and guaranteed-issue policies ask none. We match you with the carrier most likely to give you full coverage from day one.

How quickly is the benefit paid?

Once the insurer receives the death certificate and claim forms, claims are often paid within a few weeks.

Will my premium ever go up?

No. Final expense premiums are locked in for the life of the policy.
